THE WHEELCHAIR RAMP REGULATIONS FOR DWELLINGS

The main factors to be aware of when specifying ramped or stepped access to dwellings.

What are the approved documents?

Document M – Gives practical guidance to access and use of buildings

Document K – Protection from falling (Handrails)

GRADIENTS

The maximum (steepest) gradient for a domestic dwelling is 1:12
Threshold Height x Gradient = Length of ramp required
e.g. 100mm x 12 = 1200mm ramp
Remember - the longer the ramp, the shallower the slope

Level Landings (Rest Platforms):

Must be at least 1200mm long

Handrails:

They must be slip-resistant and have a warm-to-touch finish
Must be looped or be closed. This is stated to prevent clothes catching on the end of the ramp.
Infill rail must be included when the ramp height exceeds 600mm
They must be between 900-1000mm high
Rails must have Diameter between 32-50mm

Steps must have:

A height between 150-170mm
A depth of 280-425mm
A handrail if there are three or more risers
