What are the approved documents?
All options shown below are requirements of the regulations.
The minimum width of a ramped approach is 1500mm (Doc M. Vol 2. Page 19. 1.26e / BS8300-1. Page 41).
Level Landings (Rest Platforms)
Once the maximum ramp length has been achieved, you should provide a level landing to allow the user to rest.
The minimal length of a level platform is 1500mm (Doc M. Vol 2. Page 20h / Doc. K 2.13b / BS8300-1. Page 41).
The maximum gradient that your ramp can reach is determined by the change in rise (aka the height) to overcome.
The maximum ramp length for the gradients can be found in the diagram below (Doc M. Vol 2. Page 19 Table 1 / BS8300-1. Page 40).
Often ramps for public use (whether to a building or space) can accomplish a minimum compliant gradient of 1:15, or a 1:20 gradient is frequently specified.
The minimum step width is 1500mm (Doc M. Vol 2. Page 19 1.26e / BS8300-1. Page 36).
The minimum handrail height for a level platform is 1100mm (Doc K. Page 24. Diagram 3.1. / BS8300-1. Page 42).
If the ramp height exceeds 380mm, Infill handrails are required to prevent users from climbing or falling through gaps.
